years ago. In doing a "necropsy" i found that when planted the soil had
not been loosened enough, the roots were essentially root bound, not
growing out into the soil around the planting hole. The adage of "Dig a
$100 hole for a $10 tree" definitely applies.
Other things could factor in but I would not discount lack of an extensive
root system. I have also seen over watering keeping the development of a
robust root system from occurring.
