[nafex] Seeking Terry Roszko in Canada

I have a super hardy blackberry. Berries are small but there are lots of them on the plants. Terry wanted it. He lives in an area where there no blackberries. I was to send seeds to him after he sent me his postal address (his email is/was twrosz@yahoo.com ) but we lost mutual communication. I have the seeds to send but where should I send them?

[nafex] Special mulberry tree gives North Dakota a new fresh fruitoption

In response to Jim Fruth, this is information from the NAFEX Facebook forum and attached articles: The North Dakota mulberry is named 'Trader'. Trees are offered by Northern Tree Specialties, Fargo, ND. Contact: NorthernTrees@outlook.com, (701) 235-5454 or (701) 526-6438. It's also in a tree trial program with Bailey Nurseries in St. Paul. After evaluating how well the trees do, Kjelland said the nursery will decide whether to market them.

I have found the source of the problem. There were two more digest
configuration options that were set incorrectly.
I have fixed that. So, three errors corrected, digest mode works as it is
supposed to now. It will always go out weekly as long as there are 5
kilobytes of traffic to send. Those with user configuration set for digest
delivery mode should receive list traffic completely and regularly now. Let
me know if there are any problems with this. LL

That very problem has been fixed once and for all.......................I
hope
It was sending out daily digests repeatedly because it was set to send them
out with even 0 kilobytes file size so that mant sending out a new daily
digest for each message, same as normal delivery. Fixed that and set digest
delivery to weekly. I assume that should be the default rather than
monthly. Too bad so many people unsubscribed recently because of this.

Re: [nafex] NAFEX List ibiblio List Delivery Problem

I'll monitor delivery of digests but I wasn't getting daily delivery - I
was getting what seemed to be per-message digests, several per day.
Hopefully this has been fixed.

I noticed that digest mode had been set to daily delivery, no idea why, so
I reset it to weekly. I assume that is preferred over monthly.

Subscribers can set their own delivery options, either normal or digest.
The default for digest is weekly and is the only option for subscribers.
I can change that on my end to monthly, quarterly or yearly or daily. I

For this next season they'll have only apple trees and Bali cherry, and orders need to be in for next spring by October 30 of this year; but he's expecting, if I understand it correctly, to gradually get back to a more normal range of offerings.

[nafex] St, Lawrence Nurseries

St. Lawrence Nurseries is alive!

Bill MacKentley announced last year that he was retiring, and that the nursery would be closing in the spring of 2015 for lack of a successor. So I was surprised to get a mailing from them a couple of days ago. The mailing says that Connor Hardiman, who used to work there, will be taking over. For this next season they'll have only apple trees and Bali cherry, and orders need to be in for next spring by October 30 of this year; but he's expecting, if I understand it correctly, to gradually get back to a more normal range of offerings.

For those who don't know, St. Lawrence specializes in very cold-hardy fruit and nut trees -- as in, hardy to 30º to 50º below zero F. They're at http://www.sln.potsdam.ny.us/ -- though I see that the page hasn't been updated and still only mentions the retirement.

Re: [nafex] contact info needed

Hello Lee,
I have that same email address listed by Jolyn. If that doesn't work I have
a phone # where I have talked to him before and I could probably track him
down. I have been to his place in Milton where he used to live and he has
been to my place too.

The entire Mailman server at ibiblio, nafex included was down for several
days about a week or so ago. No idea
what was happening. It came back completely but there seem to be problems
with digest. No idea why. I will look at the list config to see if there is
anything I can do but I think it is an ibiblio issue.
I suggest people do the obvious. Use an email client app on their own
machine then create different email folders and filters that sort incoming
email and put them in designated folders.

Hello Pat! Great to hear from you again and that winter is finally over up
there in
free country...Pink Lady is one of the better "store bought" apples even
with its hint of dirty socks
taste (is that the apple or pesticides?). I am still connected to you on G+.
Maybe you will have a flood of expatriates wanting to be part of the
project up there.

Re: [nafex] nafex Digest, Vol 148, Issue 15

Pat Armstrong here, we've moved to south central NH in 'no-flyover land'
and starting all over again with a new garden. Zone 5b with protection we
can do Zone 6a. "Found" a 'Pink Lady' apple in our little bit of woods and
what appears to be a crabapple as well, excellent year for apples up here
so far....if the bears don't eat them all first! Missed the list, glad
it's back. Hi LL!!!

Spectacular Rot would be a good name for a punk band.

Hi its Barb Rosholdt!

I, too have not received anything from the list in over a year. Whatever
they did, helped. My digest isn't working either. But I'm back!

Re: [nafex] It's Murph..... anyone remember me?

jimfruth@charter.net
I just checked his subscription and he is in the roster, probably all
along. I reset him to normal mail delivery.
There seems to be some kind of problem with digest mode and I have no idea
what it is or how to fix it. That is an issue for the ibiblio staff
and I assume they will get around to it eventually. I suggest that if you
want to be assured of receiving posts from this list the set you delivery
mode to normal, not digest. Also create a nafex email folder and a filter
to move new nafex posts into it..

I think it is obvious that he is still subscribed to this list since his
new post appeared two hours ago.
He has probably been subscribed all along.
If he wasn't getting traffic maybe there was a problem with his ISP or
email client.
So, Jim, are you reading this message?

Re: [nafex] PS. Pawpaw question and observation

Interesting! I just thought that I was not very good at growing pawpaws
as my experience is similar to others who have described bad luck with
grafted trees.

I have planted 7 and killed 6 grafted trees over 6 1/2 years. Two did
not leaf out in the second year at my site. Four have lasted 2-4 years,
some in intensive care with regular watering, soil quality (pH,
minerals, compost) adjustments, mulch and fertilization. Three have
flowered, and one is bearing, which is the only grafted pawpaw I own
that is still living, a 'Shenandoah'. Even this 6 yo tree (at my site)
is notthriving.

I can provide a detailed description of the last fatality. My four year
old 'Allegheny' (about 7 feet high) flowered well this spring and looked
good but was sprouting from the base. I kept rubbing off the sprouts. In
June, the apical petioles suddenly started necrosing. The petiole
necrosis descended until the plant died. It now is vigorously sprouting
from the roots.

I have lifted root sprouts with great success and transplanted them (cut
a 1' diameter around the sprout the first summer, lift the second). They
are thriving. My seedlings are generally thriving- some were started
inside on a heat mat in deep pots, and some growing outside – those
outdoor seeds took 2 years to produce seedlings. It has been easy to
transplant them so far.

My working hypothesis for the grafted trees, is that I need to plant
them higher- almost on a mound. I am suspecting root rot and maybe some
replanting disease.

I am currently focusing on planting my Shenandoah x Allegheny and
Shenandoah x Potomac seeds. I am going to buy 2 more grafted trees to
test planting them high in a different site. Hopefully I will have good
fruit someday!

I have not had success this spring with grafting to my rootstock
transplants – all cleft grafts. The wood was of small diameter, < pencil
sized. I want to try grafting to my rootstock transplants again next
spring so anyone who can provide scionwood, please contact me.
