He said:

That is a novel idea but I don't believe entirely new. Some years back
and I recall on a NAFEX annual meeting while visiting Canada we saw long
cinder block buildings with walls about 10 foot high and movable clear
plastic tops. They were growing Actinidia deliciosa, kiwi fruit you see
in grocery stores. In the enclosure they would break dormancy and bloom.
As I recall they had bees internally for pollination. Then as the
outdoor temperatures raised which were acceptable to the kiwi the tops
were slid back. This was research to see if it could be done
economically to compete with California kiwi industry.

Near Altamont, Illinois there was a member of the Illinois nut growers
(deceased maybe 15 years) who had a long lean to greenhouse along the
south side of his barn. This greenhouse was maybe 100 foot long 20 foot
wide and 15 foot high. In this he planted kaki persimmons in the ground
which afforded him ample winter protection and successfully fruited kakis.

Hi Steve,

I ran across this message from January and I didn't find a record that I
had answered you.
Q # 1 I have never seen a staminate flower on any of my hybrids. I
wouldn't say impossible but highly highly highly unlikely.
Q # 2 if either of those hybrids ever produced a male flower then yes it
would be possible pollinate in 90 chromosome American persimmon.
Q # 3 Yes, 90 chromosome males will polymerize Rosseyanka and Nikita's
gift flowers. I have maybe a dozen or more of each. They grow contorted
and are slow to start bearing. And generally the fruits are of lesser
quality than either the hybrid or the virginiana.

Time will tell if my perception is correct, but that is how it has seemed in reviewing 2016.


Two of three British apples were again found wanting: one cannot hold its fruit in a low humidity heat wave and the other needs far better soil than I can afford to provide anytime soon. So I cut extra scions of D'Arcy Spice and Sturmer Pippin and included them in the packages sent to those who swapped with me this past winter. They will be top-worked to American apples this spring: Harrison and Keepsake.


I had sent too many scions of the third British apple, Bardsey, in winter '15-'16, so got only a single, huge apple from this young tree. Although spring came 2-3 weeks earlier than usual, the fruit still didn't come loose for picking until the end of September, just as previously. Bardsey is a light fruit: light lemon scent, light acid (in this environment) and light weight. Although over 3 inches high and wide it weighed just over 9 ounces, despite its juiciness. I cut only two scions this time around and hope for more fruit this year.


Winekist surprised me by blooming in its third leaf, about mid-late bloom, too. Since the bloom was far later than expected, I left two fruits on it to clinch ID. Sure enough, it's Winekist. Two inch by two, red like a beet inside, 12 Brix. Both it and Redfield look as though they will have drooping habit as trees, and the places I had hoped to put them will cause problems. Two neighbors have agreed to allow me to plant and prune for them, and they get each a lovely apple tree without wormy fruit!


Neil Crowley told me he has good crops from Claygate Pearmain, something he had sent me previously. The graft I had intended to use failed, but two back up grafts onto larger stock, Bud118, both callused. With his encouragement I now plan to plant both whips of Claygate where once the red fleshed apples were intended to go. Claygate, I understand, has an upright habit, which will be handy in the narrow area I want to fill.


The two top-working projects were the only grafts I expected to make for this yard, until the host of scions came by way of people asking for D'Arcy Spice (try it!) and other apples I have started. It appears this may be the year when the yard finally takes shape, with a majority of American apples. I will (God willing) graft every spare root stock left over from previous attempts. Next fall might reveal a very different fruit profile than what was imagined before this year.


Ben Sarek black currant again had tremendous aphid damage, reducing its crop to a third of any others (Ben More, Westwick, Orphan - no name or parentage.) I tore it out and asked for some in swapping scions. Black September came (thank you Kirk) and two hard wood cuttings are in the ground, rooting at this writing.

I learned something about using black currants: In making jam I did not remove all the woody calyxes, which can take hours. (Someone said it was possible to roll them between palms to remove them. Not in this climate, apparently.) I put currants in the blender with nearly a half cup of water and blended them. Then proceeded to cook jam. It worked well!


North Star cherry yielded its first crop, about 2 cups pitted. We made a pie with those and an equal amount of Montmorency, picked elsewhere. Wow, bright color and flavor: the Morello parent shines in North Star for color and taste, but the other parent shifted its harvest earlier by about 3 weeks. Only two maggots inside of two cups pitted. Win, win, win.

Re: [nafex] Pomona time!

The purple raspberry that I developed will be sold by Hartmann Plant Company, Lakota, MI, starting this year. Besides the really delicious flavor, two traits make it outstanding. They are: 1) one 5 year old plant produced 16 pounds of fruit and 2)occupies 24 ft. of row. Thorns are numerous but tiny measuring only 2 to 3 mm. high. Hartmann has been selling my Zone 3 Black Raspberry and will soon introduce my zone 3 blackberry. common names will be added upon introductions.

I'm in upper central NH, elev 1600, some 1000 ft above the valley, northern exposure. Always figured I was zone 4 but now I am wondering. On a map, 8 miles north of Plymouth NH, south end of Franconia Notch, north side of Bald Mountain.

The Indians grew peaches over a wide area of North America, and there
have been several "Indian Peach" cultivars and lines
brought to notice over the years. You may find a discussion in "The
Peaches of New York" by Hedrick.

Peach growers in the Niagara Peninsula favour "Bailey" seedlings for
rootstock; this is an old Indian peach from Iowa;
there are several selections of widely varying fruit quality.
Apparently it's not particularly early to harden off.

"Siberian C", "Chui Lum Tao", and "Tzim Pee Tao" are hardier but not so
generally satisfactory as rootstocks in this area.

I think that Minneapolis would be pushing it a little too far for the
available peach genetic material through test winters, even selecting
the hardiest seedlings. However, apparently some peaches survive most
winters in Minneapolis in protected locations.

Some Manchurian apricot selections are hardy on the southern Canadian
prairies although some have dormancy problems, and the Morden station of
Agriculture Canada in southwestern Manitoba bred "Morden 604" and
"Westcot"; crosses between P. mandschurica and P. armenaica. Regular
bearing should not be expected. Apricots like peaches prefer light
well-drained soils.

It might be more rewarding to try the hardy plums and cherryplums in
Minneapolis. The state extension service should have some
recommendations. Yakima (Prunus domestica) plum is reported shy bearing
but big, high-quality and semi-hardy at Minneapolis. I read that Krikon
Damson from Sweden ("krikon" means damson in Swedish) is hardy at
Minneapolis; a little hardier than Mount Royal.
