Hello Everyone,
While looking for another photo this one was found and after just having
discussed the Krymsk 1 rootstock I thought you all would like to see a
picture of Gennadiy. this was taken in 2012 upon my visit to Russia and
Ukraine. Gennadiy is in his late 80s and was in excellent health at that
time.
With him is his son Victor and they are standing in a peach rootstock
test plot. Gennadiy has devoted his entire life to Prunus rootstock
breeding and spent many years traveling throughout the former Soviet
Union collecting all the Prunus species he could. Back then due to
financial problems within the Soviet Union (socialism doesn't work) they
traveled on foot and spent the nights camped out. His young son Victor
often accompanied him along with a few other employees at the Krymsk
breeding Station. In 1991 on the NAFEX/VIR exchange agreement we visited
his breeding orchard where we saw many of those Prunus species. In his
office he had pictures of world-famous fruit breeders, including Luther
Burbank. Gennadiy was the director of the Krymsk breeding Station for
many years. After Gennadiy retired the position of director it was
passed on to 2 others. And as I understand it after their resignations
Victor became director with the guidance of his father and today remains
the director. He has followed his father's footsteps and is a peach
breeder at the station and his wife is the sweet cherry breeder. When we
visited in 1991 the breeding orchard contained 6,000 Myrobalan plum and
rootstock trial varieties.
I took with us a top-of-the-line Sony VHS camcorder and to put together
a report for the annual meeting, but it'd videos takes lots of time.
Jerry
