Year of Decision
Time will tell if my perception is correct, but that is how it has seemed in reviewing 2016.
Two of three British apples were again found wanting: one cannot hold its fruit in a low humidity heat wave and the other needs far better soil than I can afford to provide anytime soon. So I cut extra scions of D'Arcy Spice and Sturmer Pippin and included them in the packages sent to those who swapped with me this past winter. They will be top-worked to American apples this spring: Harrison and Keepsake.
I had sent too many scions of the third British apple, Bardsey, in winter '15-'16, so got only a single, huge apple from this young tree. Although spring came 2-3 weeks earlier than usual, the fruit still didn't come loose for picking until the end of September, just as previously. Bardsey is a light fruit: light lemon scent, light acid (in this environment) and light weight. Although over 3 inches high and wide it weighed just over 9 ounces, despite its juiciness. I cut only two scions this time around and hope for more fruit this year.
Winekist surprised me by blooming in its third leaf, about mid-late bloom, too. Since the bloom was far later than expected, I left two fruits on it to clinch ID. Sure enough, it's Winekist. Two inch by two, red like a beet inside, 12 Brix. Both it and Redfield look as though they will have drooping habit as trees, and the places I had hoped to put them will cause problems. Two neighbors have agreed to allow me to plant and prune for them, and they get each a lovely apple tree without wormy fruit!
Neil Crowley told me he has good crops from Claygate Pearmain, something he had sent me previously. The graft I had intended to use failed, but two back up grafts onto larger stock, Bud118, both callused. With his encouragement I now plan to plant both whips of Claygate where once the red fleshed apples were intended to go. Claygate, I understand, has an upright habit, which will be handy in the narrow area I want to fill.
The two top-working projects were the only grafts I expected to make for this yard, until the host of scions came by way of people asking for D'Arcy Spice (try it!) and other apples I have started. It appears this may be the year when the yard finally takes shape, with a majority of American apples. I will (God willing) graft every spare root stock left over from previous attempts. Next fall might reveal a very different fruit profile than what was imagined before this year.
Ben Sarek black currant again had tremendous aphid damage, reducing its crop to a third of any others (Ben More, Westwick, Orphan - no name or parentage.) I tore it out and asked for some in swapping scions. Black September came (thank you Kirk) and two hard wood cuttings are in the ground, rooting at this writing.
I learned something about using black currants: In making jam I did not remove all the woody calyxes, which can take hours. (Someone said it was possible to roll them between palms to remove them. Not in this climate, apparently.) I put currants in the blender with nearly a half cup of water and blended them. Then proceeded to cook jam. It worked well!
North Star cherry yielded its first crop, about 2 cups pitted. We made a pie with those and an equal amount of Montmorency, picked elsewhere. Wow, bright color and flavor: the Morello parent shines in North Star for color and taste, but the other parent shifted its harvest earlier by about 3 weeks. Only two maggots inside of two cups pitted. Win, win, win.
