I've done the same thing with a Kadota fig as Alan does with his figs, except my fig is planted in a large, plastic pot with holes in its side. In late November, I dig up the pot, severing a roots that have grown out into the surrounding ground, and put the plant in my unheated basement. I preserve a couple of feet of top growth on the plant. Problem is that Kadota is very late ripening — worth it because it's also very delicious.
