As I understand it, the Kaolin powder elicits a grooming response in the adult moth, often deterring her from laying at all. There may be something to the powder interfering with the newly hatched caterpillars, also. The powder and physical barrier seem to work best in concert.

This year I hope to build nest boxes for violet-green swallows with the entrance 3/4" tall by 1  1/4" wide to keep house sparrows at bay. Each can be built from a 1 x 6" rough cut cedar plank - no perch in front. I'll put 'em just below the eave out back.  Swallows may do a better job of coddling moth patrol than can I. If it works, I'll be cleaning next boxes each fall and putting them up each spring once the swallows arrive.

Naomi: if the worm is already present in the applet you wrap, once it reaches maximum size it will chew its way out to pupate in the ground. When I put the footies on, I look each applet over for a tiny puncture mark. any with one gets thinned away and removed from the property.
