Re: [nafex] mulching trees - a perspective

I mulch heavily with leaves and wood chips and could care less the source. My issue is not getting things to grow, it is keeping them from getting too vigorous. The several years when family matters and professional responsibilities keep me from maintaining my soil and plantings were obvious by the reduction in plant vigor and overall health. It takes time to build up your soil and then you need to maintain it. It really is a mini ecosystem whether we are discussing the trunk to the drip line of a tree, a trellis setting or actually intensive garden beds.

I have been doing this the better part of 40 years in several different locations, always with similar results. When I don't want vigor (pears for example) I plant in grass or gravel as a mulch.

As I said just a perspective and one tempered by much experience.
