Re: [nafex] North Star vs Meteor vs ?

Anton,

Whew thank you for the response. I was feeling like leper.
Boy you are in pretty piece of country. I go Charlotte/Moorseville frequently and low the surrounding countryside.

Are you able to grow sweet cherries at all? I am helping a Russian immigrate in Moorseville with her yard and am at a disadvantage since I do not know the conditions there. I surmise that sweet cherries are far too difficult.

Mr. Fluffy,

'Northstar' is also my favorite all-around pie cherry. Perhaps a bit surprising since my 36 years of orcharding have been in the hot & humid Southeastern US. In my Georgia orchard, I had 'Montmorency', Starkspur Montmorency, 'Meteor' and 'North Star'. All were good, but 'North Star' was the most productive and healthy. Since moving to North Carolina, I've grown 'North Star', 'Surefire', 'Balaton', 'Carmine Jewel' and recently added 'Romeo'. The 'Balaton's were terrible. Mediocre quality fruit on an unhealthy tree. 'Surefire' was very productive if we had a good chilling winter and the cherries were very good quality, but most winters we don't get enough chilling to please 'Surefire' and it eventually died.

'Carmine Jewel' finally produced well this year and the cherry quality was very good. It is a healthy tree, also. I have had problems in past years with CJ and brown rot, if we get a lot of rain during ripening season.

Of all the pie cherries I've grown, 'North Star' remains the favorite, although if Carmine Jewel continues to behave like this year, it will finally be a cherry to equal North Star. The trees also stay small, like North Star.

[nafex] North Star vs Meteor vs ?

Gang,

I have been growing NorthStar (sour cherry) for about 20 years now. I must say I am impressed. It make an attractive addition to the integrated landscape, gives copious amounts of fruit for the tree canopy, is easily held at 6 feet and is generally insect, disease resistant.

All that being said I am always up for an improvement. Does anyone have any opinion on Meteor or any other dwarf to semi-dwarf sour cherry? Additionally a comparison to NorthStar would be greatly appreciated.

I am interested in small trees that can be easily netted for the integrated urban landscape.

[nafex] The orchard keepers « Panorama - www.TheOrchardKeepers.com

http://panorama.madamasr.com/2015/the-orchard-keepers/
photo stories The orchard keepers by Bryony Dunne
http://panorama.madamasr.com/2015/the-orchard-keepers/

Sinai, the land of extremes, is mostly in the headlines these days due to
land disputes, drug trafficking or religious violence. But beyond the
headlines, hidden in South Sinai's mountain valleys, lie hidden orchards —
tiny patches of green life dating back to biblical times and tended to by
dedicated Bedouin from the Gabaliya tribe. I traveled to the Sinai desert
in 2012 to photograph the remaining Gabaliya garden owners. The orchards
could only be reached on foot through steep passes, so each morning I would
hike to search them out. Sometimes I would just go for the day, and others
for a week. Every orchard has its own distinct character, manifest in the
way the walls were built, the crops that are grown and how they are stored
and used. Some are meticulously maintained and are an essential source of
food for families. Others are more symbolic. In one, a pair of old olive
trees has been kept in memory of a family that spent many summers there. In
addition to this photography collection, which has been published in a
photo book, I produced a documentary film about the orchard keepers. The
film describes the tender trap between a deep and meaningful tradition and
the encroaching claws of modernity. The film will be screened and the book
presented by Maria Golia (author of photography and Egypt) on June 10 at
the Contemporary Image Collective (CIC) at 7 pm. www.TheOrchardKeepers.com

We plan to have some grafting demos at the annual meeting in La Crosse. It may be a bit late your needs, but good information all the same.

Re: [nafex] Annual meeting reminder

Good Evening ~mIEKAL

The wine tasting is Friday evening after the field tour and before the
banquet. The technical sessions is on Thursday which is what the
registration covers. No, if you're only coming Friday evening you don't
need to pay the registration fee. If you attend the field tour Friday
then you would pay for that but not the registration.

[nafex] Fwd: [permaculture] Act now to protect small local food processors

Subject: [permaculture] Act now to protect small local food processors
To: permaculture <permaculture@lists.ibiblio.org>

The FDA is up to more shenanigans with their proposals for implementing the
Food Safety Modernization Act (a/k/a Destroy Local Ag Act).

Despite the Tester Hagan amendment mandating exemption of small farms and
food processors, the FDA is moving to apply the exemption for processors to
only those who sell "at the farm gate". Thus opening the doors for severe
regulations of sellers of prepared and processed foods at farmers markets,
stores, etc.

Today is apparently the last date for comments, they close at midnight.

All the comment details are at

http://farmandranchfreedom.org/comments-needed-fda-registration-rule/

Please take a moment and send the FDA a message.

Re: [nafex] Dwarf Geraldi Mulberry

Wow, your experience parallels my own. In the last 4 years I've tried to
graft Geraldi 6 times with no success. I just tried again the other day.
Hope this time it works. Each attempt has been with a new rootstock from a
different source. Not sure what the problem is.

Re: [nafex] 'Kim' mulberry

Question is defiantly answered.  So my next question is, when can we get you to do a mulberry presentation at a NAFEX meeting?

[nafex] small locale grafting lessons

It's getting a bit late, and my left-over scionwood has broken dormancy and one kind is trying to grow, but I thought I could offer for education. Anyone in the Madison WI area want grafting lesson, or want to arrange a small class on short notice?

Is Kim available through Cliff? Or you?

It appears that Kim is larger by far than any of the other mulberries on
the plate, several of which are highly regarded (for mulberries ;). Is the
tree productive? Full size? Are the berries sweet, sweet-tart, or something
else? Any other insights?

Thanks!

Re: [nafex] 'Kim' mulberry

Relating to the mulberry variety Kim I can addsome words:I found similar variety in the Bulgarian cityBlagoevgrad. The tree owner sells the fruits on the market. I am living nearMunich, Germany and I have the variety near my House. Using the following linkhttps://plus.google.com/photos/111267136626113692786/albums/6156619024520340689?banner=pwa&sort=1you can see the photographed last year ripefruits. Betreff: Re: [nafex] 'Kim' mulberry

Thanks Rob

Is Kim available through Cliff? Or you?

It appears that Kim is larger by far than any of the other mulberries on
the plate, several of which are highly regarded (for mulberries ;). Is the
tree productive? Full size? Are the berries sweet, sweet-tart, or something
else? Any other insights?

Thanks!

-Pete

Re: [nafex] mulching trees

Just reading this thread now. Wondering if anyone has tried *weeder geese*
in areas like this? I have forest garden areas with understory grasses and
herbs. Now at 10years most of the work is keeping the rampant vegetation
down. Which is a great problem because all the biomass feeds the soil. But
Im thinking of trying weeder geese and in your case, Jay, this might work
as well.
