[nafex] medlar bletting

I noticed my breda giant medlars starting to drop a bit today so picked them all. Happy to see they sized up a lot more-- almost all over 1 1/2" many not quite 2"-- almost double the size of last years and more like what I would hope for from a proclaimed "giant."
Last years crop was more so a disappointment because the fruit failed to blet properly, and instead dessicated and shriveled. After a couple years of successful bletting, I thought the process was pretty fail safe, but apparently didn't "do it right." It seems this may be a somewhat poorly understood area. I think of the numerous claims that frost is required to sweeten certain fruits, which as a northern grower skrimping for degree days on some of these fruits, seems clearly bogus. That said, I did leave a couple medlars on a tree accidentally through much of the winter. If I remember correctly, I found them during a thaw in March or so. They were perfectly bletted and as delicious as any I've had. And surprisingly moist. What exactly is going on inside the medlar-- fermentation of some kind I assume, and what are the optimal conditions for this to take place? I assume they can be refrigerated for a good while and bletted in batches if need be.

I'm in 4b in southwest Wisconsin and planted carpathians in the early 90s. The trees are all still alive and just now starting to bear nuts tho after last winter, the coldest since 1978, they didn't throw nuts this year.

I can't speak to the whole range, but there was a huge English walnut (perhaps not Carpathian) in the yard of the place where Dad used to moor his boat somewhere near Chestertown, on the Eastern shore of Maryland. Sea level--plenty humid. Warm, too, although perhaps not as warm as NC. If you can find a copy of J. Russell Smith's Tree Fruits he has a chapter on English walnut & talks about where he knew of trees growing well. Muffy Barrett

Where do Carpathian walnuts do well on the east coast? I always though
it was too warm, too much disease here in 7a NC.

Will they thrive in the Appalachians in zone 6?

Re: [nafex] walnut hybrid - Carpathian walnut range

I've not looked at it in several years, but there was a big walnut at the
parsonage of one of the churches in town here that I thought was a
J.nigraXregia hybrid; leaf and bark most closely resembling J.regia, but
nut more reminiscent of J.nigra...though not quite like any pure J.nigra
I've seen.

If I can remember, I'll try to swing by next time I'm in the neighborhood
and see if I can snag a few nuts for examination.

Illinois veterinary college in'53 (second class).
3 or 4 years later I bought 80 acres of brush weeds and some worn out farm
land nine miles from my residence. I had it cleared for pasture and farm

These are good cultivars. I know of no winter hardiness problems with any
BW variety in zone 5 or parts of zone 4, likely all of zone 4.

I have Emma Kay, very thin shell such that one needs be careful in removing
husk and cleaning not to break the shell. But flavor isn't as intense as
my wild seedlings. But good!

This sounds very interesting. I too would love to see a picture. I am too
far north to grow carpathian walnuts ( or at least so far), but black
walnuts do well here on Manitoulin Island ( in Lake Huron - Ontario's near
north, zone 4b). I love to eat black walnuts, but any improvement in
cracking them that grows on fairly hardy tree would be most exciting,

I have around 25 or so black walnut seedlings of local stock started Spring
of 2014 and would be interested in getting scion wood from your tree,maybe
in Winter/Spring of 2016, when my trees are big enough to graft. Would you
be interested in selling me some some day?

It makes me chuckle that I now know of 3 veterinarians who are active in
NAFEX and have been growing nut trees for decades-- you, me and Lucky
Pitmann. Maybe that is because vets tend to be all a bit "nutty'.

I have a Ken Dooley black x carpathian hybrid here grafted to three
understocks. They are about 25 feet high. All 3 are very shy bearers like maybe
only 10 nuts in three years on three trees. This year found only one. They
look like your pictured husk and larger than a baseball, almost soft ball
size. Took a picture of this years single nut along side an average BK.
Thought I had pictures of one 2 years ago, but can't find it.

limbs to one, it should become a central leader and develop horizantal limbs
which should then bear fruit. My guess is you are three years from fruiting
again.

[nafex] Puffball mushrooms

Hey, it's a fruit…of sorts…fruiting body of the fungus.



Anyway, just hit the jackpot today on my noon walk – got a bunch of large
egg-size puffballs I started watching earlier in the week, and a couple of
softball to volleyball sized 'shrooms.

More than the wife and I will want to eat in one or two meals; would like to
'save' some for the daughter who'll be visiting in a week or two.

Have previously sautéed slices and frozen them for later re-heating and
consumption; they're OK that way, but not nearly so nice as fresh from the
yard/pasture.

Googling for info suggests that just freezing uncooked slices doesn't yield
very good results…but I wondered… if I just took 'em right out of the
freezer and plopped 'em in the frying pan, still frozen, to sautee, or
lightly breaded them and deep-fried them… would that work?
